Google has reoriented its autonomous driving efforts away from developing its own car without a steering wheel and pedals, according to an information report. Instead, it is said that the company partners with automakers in more conventional cars in order to possibly launch an autonomous shared-travel service by the end of next year.
Fiat Chrysler is producing a new prototype vehicle for Google based on the Pacifica minivan; If the test is successful, it is reported that it will be used in the eventual commercial service. The two companies announced an association to develop self-taught minivans in May.
It is said that Alphabet General Director Larry Page and Chief Financial Officer Ruth Porat are behind the decision to swing, believing that the existing plan of self-production of a radically new car without a steering wheel is impractical. It is said to be a controversial move within the autonomous driving division of Google X, known as Chauffeur, with Google co-founder Sergey Brin also in favor of the idea of developing an end-to-end car.
