Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence of a duty or obligation. Traditionally, absenteeism has been seen as an indicator of poor individual performance, as well as a breach of an implicit contract between the employee and the employer; It was seen as a management problem, framed in economic or quasi-economic terms. A more recent scholarship seeks to understand absenteeism as an indicator of psychological, medical or social adjustment to work.

High absenteeism in the workplace can be indicative of poor morale, but absences can also be caused by workplace hazards or sick building syndrome. Many employers use statistics such as the Bradford factor that do not distinguish between genuine illness and absence for inappropriate reasons. In 2013 in the United Kingdom, the ICPD estimated that the average worker had 7.6 days of illness per year and that absenteeism cost employers £ 5.95 per employee per year.

As a result, many employees feel compelled to come to work while they are sick, and transmit contagious diseases to their co-workers. This leads to even greater absenteeism and reduced productivity among other workers who try to work while they are sick. Workforces often excuse medical absenteeism if the employee provides supporting documentation from their physician. According to Nelson & Quick (2008) people who are dissatisfied with their work are absent more frequently. They went on to say that the kind of dissatisfaction that most often leads employees to lose work is dissatisfaction with the job itself.

The psychological model that discusses this is the "retirement model," which assumes that absenteeism represents the individual withdrawal from unsatisfactory working conditions. This finds empirical support in a negative association between absence and job satisfaction, especially satisfaction with work itself.

The medical understanding of absenteeism finds support in research linking absenteeism with smoking, drinking, lumbar pain, and migraines. The absence attributed to medical causes is often still, at least in part, voluntary. Research shows that more than $ 1 trillion is lost annually due to poor productivity as a result of medical absenteeism, and that a greater focus on preventive well-being could reduce these costs. The line between psychological and medical causality is blurred, as there are positive links between work stress and depression and absenteeism. Depressive tendencies may be behind part of the absence attributed to poor physical health, as with the adoption of a "culturally approved sick role". This places the adjective "disease" before the word "absence", and carries a load of more evidence than is normally offered.
