A NEW PORTABLE EQUIPMENT FOR DETECTION OF PSYCHOPHYSICAL CONDITIONS

Abstract

This paper deals with the Disease Detector (DDX) that is a virtual reality control system for detection of
Parkinson disease.
The control system consists of a small board with an internal fuzzy micro controller capable of acquiring,
through the joystick, the well known three basic parameters (reaction, speed and force) in order to detect the
state of health and perform them by fuzzy rules. The resulting output can be visualized through a display or
transmitted by a communication interface.

Introduction

This paper deals with the Disease Detector (DDX), a new portable equipment with detection
of response time and psychophysical conditions in normal and exceptional environments also
with virtual reality measurements with a fuzzy-based control system. It may be adopted for
earth and space applications, because of its portability, in order to measure all the reactions in
front of external effects. The external effects require 1) the response to sounds, 2) a soft touch
of a button, 3) by pronouncing a word, 4) the touch of the finger in front of a virtual reality
drawing of the finger itself, and the equipment is able to measure the reaction time of the
person.

Purpose

Through DDX it is possible to point out some characteristics about the extension of the index
finger of one hand with the target to find and to estimate the kinematics characteristics, the
control of the movement and the impressed force.
The system is composed by:
- a skeleton: mounted on a support structure to acquire the finger position of the patient who
puts his hand in a glove in vertical position.
- variable rotational resistors: sited in correspondence of the phalanx are able to retrieve
finger movements.
- surface active electrodes: these send a signal to the electromiograph through a double
channel probe.

Conclusions

In this paper, we have described an innovative system for Parkinson disease detection.
Present systems of detection are very reliable but not portable.
The solution proposed, by using virtual reality, takes the advantage of portability without
losing in efficiency and in diagnosis efficiency.
It is also provided the ability of transferring diagnosis through a remote communication
interface in order to monitor daily the state of health of a patient.
The system is an intelligent-machine based on soft computing techniques and so, its
efficiency can be improved considering more example for membership function calibration
or, moreover, improving the response correctness by using a self learning technique.
