Connected Dominating Sets (CDSs) can serve as virtual backbones for wireless networks. A smaller virtual backbone incurs less maintenance overhead. Unfortunately, computing a minimum size CDS is NP-hard, and thus most researchers in this area concentrate on how to construct smaller CDSs.
