Embedded processors are increasingly deployed in applicationsrequiring high performance with good real-timecharacteristics whilst being low power. Parallelism hasto be extracted in order to improve the performance atan architectural level. Extracting instruction level parallelismrequires extensive speculation which adds complexityand increases power consumption. Alternatively, parallelismcan be provided at the thread level. Simultaneous Multithreading

The competency of superscalar CPUs attains more dominance with the usage of simultaneous multithreading or the SMT technique. With this method, the modern processor resources can be exploited to the fullest level by the multiple independent threads. To do so these multiple threads utilizes the same clock cycle to carry out different instructions by using the execution unit that the first thread spared.

The Ping of Death uses a ping system utility to create an IP packet that exceeds the maximum 65,536 bytes of data allowed by the IP specification. The oversize packet is then sent to an unsuspecting system. Systems may crash, hang, or reboot when they receive such a maliciously crafted packet. This attack is not new, and all OS vendors have fixes in place to handle the oversize packets.

Multithreading has been proposed as a method to reduce long latencies in multiprocessor systems. This is advantageous when one has large on chip caches, associativity of two, and a memory access cost of roughly 50 instructions. A small number of threads is enough, the thread system need not be xtraordinarily fast. The miss ratios are significantly less for multithreading because switch-on-miss multithreading introduces unfair scheduling.
