On the macro scale, feedback control is routinely applied to improve performance and enable new tasks in complex and uncertain systems operating in noisy environments. Our lab has focused on applying feedback control ideas to systems on the micro scale. Here we show how control methods can improve existing performance in the UCLA lab-on-a-chip electrowetting system and can create entirely new capabilities in our 'micro fluidic tweezers' cell steering devices. In the Electro-Wetting-On-Dielectric (EWOD) system developed at UCLA by CJ Kim, a grid ....etc

The primary objective of a design engineer is to ensure a safe, efficient design of equipment to carry out a process. This needs a good understanding of the various processes occurring in the system. The operation of the equipment under varying operating conditions must be analyzed since any process is prone to disturbances. This needs a model which captures all interactions. Such a model can be used for nonlinear analysis and to subsequently develop control strategies and optimize plant operation. The steady state and dynamic behavior is predi ....etc

Over the last decade, particle tracking microrheology has matured as a new tool for complex fluids research. The main advantages of microrheology over traditional macroscopic rheometry are: the required sample size is extremely small (~ 1 mL); local viscoelastic properties in a sample can be probed with high spatial resolution (~1-10 mm); and the sample is not disturbed by moving rheometer parts. I will present two examples of recent work in my group that highlight how these characteristics can be exploited to acquire unique information about t ....etc

Although grinding is considered one of the more established manufacturing processes, it is still relatively poorly understood. In particular, the interaction of the wheel with the workpiece at times seems more like an art than a science. In this presentation, a 3-D topographic measurement approach which encompasses both the wheel and the workpiece will be presented. The topographic information obtained from the wheel will be applied to a model to predict the workpiece surface generated which will then be verified by experimentation. The prelimi ....etc

This seminar presents the manufacturing processes of thermoplastic structures including piezoceramic patches (PZT). The objective of the study reported here was to find a trade-off between the manufacturing conditions and the thermal endurance of the PZT patches. We studied the influence of high temperatures on the PZT efficiency during manufacturing. Two processes were considered: injection molding and thermoforming. The studied object consists of a polypropylene plate containing a PZT patch integrated at different positions. On the one hand, ....etc

Important two-phase fluid mechanics problems that are dominated or significantly affected by capillary effects are not oddities but rather daily events in our lives. Seemingly unrelated topics such as the economics of satellite television and pulmonary health and safety research share capillary fluids physics. Current and future miniaturized two-phase heat transfer loops and fuel cells possess similar concerns. This seminar presents research in a number of capillary fluids topics on Earth and in orbit. An energy method code, Surface Evolver, is ....etc |
