Ktrace: A Framework for Tracing the Linux Kernel


Many tools exist to analyze the Linux Operating System but very few of them can be used to analyze the Linux kernel. The existing tools are not fully capable of providing a picture of the kernel level activity of the system to a user - some tools are inclined towards a particular aspect of the kernel while others provide a more generic information without going into details.

The limited built-in configurability of Linux can lead to expensive code size overhead when it is used in the embedded systems application. This problems can be overcome by the use of the link-time compaction that exploit the previously well known fixed runtime environment of many embedded systems. The ARM XScale and i386 platforms are used as the test platforms and with the proposed method, upto 16% reduction in the kernel memory footprint can be achieved. The proposed techniques can be implemented easily with simple additions to existing bin ....etc

CPUs run either in Kernel Mode or in User Mode

when in User Mode, some parts of RAM can’t be addressed, some instructions can’t be executed, and I/O ports can’t be accessed

when in Kernel Mode, no restriction is put on the program

Abstract
Linux Virtual Server is a high-performance and highly scalable server built on a cluster of real servers. The architecture of the cluster is transparent to end-users. End users only see a single virtual server.
