Fractal images

Fractal images provide an interesting way of storing an acceptable likeness of an image using a small amount of data. Compression much better than JPEG or GIF is usually achieved. Unfortunately the compression technology is proprietary however decompression appears not to be. The widespread use of this form of image storage and transmission could drastically reduce the communications overheads associated with the World Wide Web.

As i read all papers of Fractal robot, But what are practical application of that ? where this technology is implemented practically ? Please give me live example when & where they implemented. As all papers are of 2003, is there any advancement after 2003 ? How this is useful in Military Application, in Earthquake problem. Please give me reply as early as possible.
