INTRODUCTION


Bamboo has been used as a construction material in certain area for

centuries. A study of bamboo is used as a reinforcement in precast concrete

elements was carried out in U.S Army Engineer Waterway experiment station in 1964.

Bamboo was given recent consideration for use as reinforcement in soil cement

pavement slabs in which the slabs behave inelastically even under light loads.

Bamboo, a species of plant in the grass family possessing good strength and flexibility can be used as a building material. However, due to the emergence of better building materials, bamboos use is limited to certain applications only. Besides the extensive use of steel and other building materials for the construction in the present trend, bamboo can replace wood and steel in many applications like roof covering, footbridges, reinforcement, scaffolding, bamboo houses, etc which accounts for low cost construction. ....etc

Introduction

For more than 200 years tribal farmers of the north-eastern part of India, in the state of Megalaya, have been using an indigenous technique of bamboo drip irrigation to irrigate their plantation crops. These farmers of the Jaintia and Khasi hill areas have developed this system of tapping springs and stream water to grow betal leaves, black pepper and arecanut (3).

Abstract:
Bamboo is used as reinforcement in soil mainly to stabilize slopes or river banks or to support roads. Now a days treated and untreated bamboo is used along with other materials such as bitumen, geotextile etc. in soft soil reinforcement. The present study attempts to review the behaviour of bamboo reinforcing elements under different loading conditions as well as in different structures.
In embankments sulphur treated bamboo mats have higher stresses and swelling potential ....etc

an ingenious system of tapping of stream and springwater by using bamboo pipes to irrigate plantations is widely prevalent. It is so perfected that about 18-20 litres of water entering the bamboo pipe system per minute gets transported over several hundred metres and finally gets reduced to 20-80 drops per minute at the site of the plant. The tribal farmers of Khasi and Jaintia hills use the 200-year-old system.
