The Maemo platform is made up of Linux and open source software extensively distributed in the most popular Linux distributions. At its core is Hildon application framework, which is based on GNOME technology. GNOME provides an intuitive and attractive PC desktop for Linux-based end users and a powerful framework for creating applications that integrate into the rest of the PC desktop. Maemo adapts this widely deployed desktop technology to portable devices with extensions and modifications to develop a user interface framework best suited for portable device category devices. The development platform is aimed at open source developers and innovation houses that develop applications and new technologies for portable devices connected to the Internet based on Linux.
