Purpose- distinguish between duplicate element names.

Each schema file associated with a URL to uniquely identify where elements come from .Like packages in Java

History of XML


XML was developed by an XML Working Group

SGML Editorial Review Board

World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in 1996.

Chaired - Jon Bosak of Sun Microsystems & XML Special Interest Group

The first working draft was released in 1997

W3C recommended XML 1.0 on February 10, 1998

XML 1.1 - February4, 2004.


Conclusion


Namespaces are a simple and straightforward way to distinguish names used in XML documents, no matter where they come from.
