ABSTRACT

This paper describes the design and implementation of Wi-Fi technology. Wi-Fi connectivity allows users to transfer digital data wirelessly, at broadband speeds. Wi-Fi can be used to construct a local network of computers, or to connect our laptop to the internet. Wi-Fi enabled device such as a computer, cell phone or PDA can connect to the Internet when in proximity of an access point. The region covered by one or several access points is called a hotspot. Hotspots can range from a single room to many square miles of overlapping hotspots.Wi-Fi is a brand originally licensed by the Wi-Fi Alliance [the trade organization that tests and certifies equipment compliance with the 802.11x standards] to describe the underlying technology of wireless local area networks (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 specifications . In this paper we have explained about the usage of Wi-Fi the current fields. We have also explained about the Wi-Fi connection.
As laptop and handheld device prices are dipping day-by-day, more and more people will have and use them; this will take Wi-Fi mainstream. As prices falling worldwide, wireless broadband will potentially increase Wi-Fi adoption. Thus the usage of Wi-Fi is safe and sound.

Introduction

Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity and is the commercial name of the IEEE 802.11b network protocol . Wi-Fi is a network providing wireless broadband access to e-mail and corporate intranets via a computer or a PDA compatible with the Internet. Wi-Fi belongs to the wireless Ethernet family of technologies, also known as wireless LAN (local area network) or radio LAN.Wi-Fi provides a very broad bandwidth in the 2.4-gigahertz (GHz) frequency band:
 up to 11 mbit/s theoretical.
 5 mbit/s operational divided between users.
Wi-Fi is the way to connect devices together without wires. The main attraction of Wi-Fi is that it eliminates wires.

Technical information

Wi-Fi: How it Works

Wireless Internet Access has four components that form its structure: high-speed access, a networking gateway, a wireless network and a wireless customer. The customer connects wirelessly through the wireless network to the gateway, it then launches their internet browser, authenticates through the gateway by entering a coupon code or purchasing time and the user has high-speed internet.
Wi-Fi Security
Firewall is a security device that controls access from the internet to a local
Network. Some Hotspots require WEP key to connect that is the connection is considered to be private or secure. As for open connections, anyone with a WiFi card can gain access to that hotspot. WEP stands for Wired Equivalence Privacy. It is much secure and is what WEP, the user must input the WEP key code. Think of it as a simple password

Advantages

Allows LANs to be deployed without cabling, typically reducing the costs of network deployment and expansion. Spaces where cables cannot be run, such as outdoor areas and historical buildings, can host wireless LANs.

Future Wi-Fi Advancements

In today’s vast growing world of telecommunications many new products; software and hardware tools are being developed. Computer engineers are working around the clock just to come up with new ideas that may be accomplished.Until now, with wireless networking the simplicity of placing a computerized device within an access point will allow people to connect to the cyber world. Consequently, the development process is continuing until a certain standard is reached. Even though there is a wide acceptance regarding WiFi, people will still be concerned will things like security and cost. Bluetooth is a wireless technology that allows computers, phones and other devices to talk to each other over short distances (typically about 10 meters). Another advantage is that it could connect virtually every multimedia device in your home without using any wires These new WiFi advancements are destined to change the networking world all together.

Conclusion

The minimal cost of implementing Wireless LAN will ensure that far more users will have wireless enabled laptops than previously envisaged. The Wireless LAN (WLAN) industry is also growing rapidly due to lower priced WiFi stations and a rapid standardization of the WiFi technology. WLAN services are beginning to appear to consumers in the form of WLAN services in coffee shops or other public premises and are becoming commonplace in applications such as trading floors, supermarkets, airports, hotels and are increasingly being used in office environments. Meanwhile the number of vendors keeps increasing, the technology keeps getting better and less expensive and with the recently completed IEEE 802.11 standard, interoperability between vendors is becoming less of an issue.
With the Indian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology declaring 2007 as the Year of Broadband, the priorities are clearly set. Moreover, convenient form factors such as PC Cards are becoming common. It is easy to use and deploy WLANs and the cost is effective compared to wire LANs, which have many indirect and hidden costs associated with installation and reconfigurations. There are many factors to be considered when deploying a wireless network. The proliferation of Access Point’s has reached the point of requiring coordination and standardization to ensure full utilization of the technology. It’s in the best interest of the enterprise to adopt a single IEEE 802.11 standard to ensure ubiquitous access for registered and authenticated wireless users. The single standard will also minimize overhead and expenditures that are normally associated with enterprises without technology standardization.
