Condition Based Maintenance (CBM)
Condition based Maintenance or predictive maintenance, uses primarily non
destructive testing techniques, visual inspection, and performance data to
assess machinery condition.Here, the arbitrarily timed maintenance tasks are replaced by appropriate maintenance task only when necessitated by the equipment condition . expected P-F interval govern the different task intervals. knowledge of failure mechanisms,advancements in monitoring and sensor devices, advancements in failure forecasting techniques etc are advantageous in the prediction process.
The other approach other than condition based is the preventive approach. Here, the components and sub-systems or systems degradation is prevented by maintenances at fixed maintenance intervals. But in CBM, maintenance need is based on the actual condition of the machine rather than on some preset schedule.
Condition based maintenance on MV cable circuits
For service-aged medium voltage power cable circuits, cable diagnostics is used for condition assessment and status determination of of the underground cable network. Economical and technical assessment is done on the condition data. maintenance concept for cable circuits is derived from it and maintenance policy for the network is derived from it. a method of CBM on power cables is discussed here.
