An anti-collision system for trains is an electronic system that has been nominated to ensure the safety of the passengers and to ensure proper operation of the trains. It helps to avoid the risk of dangerous and unpredictable collisions of trains, which can be due to human errors or equipment failures. The GPS system described here was designed and it was created by Rajaram Boseji and patented by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited.
Global Positioning System (GPS) relies on satellites for anti-collision devices (ACD) status conditions. Information about these frequencies to prevent brakes and collisions automatically through radio frequency transmission. Such ACD applications have been refined not only to prevent the midsize collision but also to refurbish their occurrence in station yards.
Infrared ACD
Let us take an example. An infrared (IR) sensor and IR transmitter is imposed on engines of 1 and 2 trains. This system works in the view of the line. The IR sensor is connected to the breaking circuits on each train, which is connected to a stepper motor that applies to the train on the brake, whenever there is an adjacent train in its line-of-square.
There are drawbacks of such an anti-collision system:
1. The system fails on the winding path because it only works in line-of-sky
2. Can not stop rear-end, side-track collision
3. The range of IR systems depends on the IR transmitter power, which is inversely proportional to the reaction time; More power, less response time
4. The system is affected by the weather conditions like rain and storm which interfere with the IR signal
