An artist of mime or mime is a person who uses mime as a theatrical medium or as a performance art, which implies imitating, or representing a story through body movements, without the use of speech. In earlier times, in English, that interpreter was usually called a mime. Miming is distinguished from the silent comedy, in which the artist is a perfect character in a movie or sketch.
Jacques Copeau, strongly influenced by the Commedia dell'arte and the Japanese theater Noh, used masks in the training of his actors. Étienne Decroux, a student of his, was very influenced by this and began to explore and develop the possibilities of mime and developed the body mime in a highly sculptural way, taking him out of the realms of naturalism. Jacques Lecoq contributed significantly to the development of mime and physical theater with his training methods.
