The Ration-shop inventory control system is an important instrument to guarantee the availability of food grains to the public at affordable prices, as well as to improve the food security of the poor. The central schemes such as "Annapurna" (for retirees) and Anthyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) (for the poorest of the poor) are also being implemented in the state since May 2000 and February 2001, respectively.
