Biomedical instrumentation involves devices designed and connected to each other in a scientifically adequate way to detect signals and process them for human visualization and their subsequent processing for control, therapy and other purposes. Some instruments are digital thermometer, electrocardiograph, etc.
The programs and training courses in biomedical instrumentation (sometimes known as bioinstrumentation) cover the repair, maintenance and operation of medical electronic equipment. While independent programs in this field are not common, biomedical instrumentation can also be studied within other related programs. For example, at the certificate level, prospective students can find certificates of biomedical electronic technology and certificates of biomedical electronics.
Training in biomedical instrumentation can also be found in associate degree programs in biomedical equipment technology or electronic technology. Courses within these programs often include practical training, and credits can be transferred to a bachelor's degree program. There are also some undergraduate programs in biomedical engineering that include a concentration or follow-up in biomedical instrumentation for students who want to learn more about the design and development of medical electronic equipment. Online programs are commonly available at the associate level and above.
