Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), owned and founded by the Government of India, is an engineering and manufacturing company headquartered in New Delhi, India. Established in 1964, BHEL is India's largest manufacturer of power generation equipment. As of 2017, BHEL supplied equipment that contributed around 55% of the total installed power generation capacity in India.
In 2013, Govt of India awarded him the prestigious status of Maharatna (great jewel) for his excellent track record and large scale operations. The elite list of Maharatna companies contains a total of 8 huge public sector companies (PSUs) from India. The state of Maharatna allows the Boards of these companies to improve the financial and operational autonomy of the Government.
BHEL was established in 1964 giving way to the Indigenous Heavy Equipment Industry in India. Heavy Electricals (India) Limited merged with BHEL in 1974. In 1991, BHEL became a public limited company. Over time, it developed the ability to produce a variety of electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment for all sectors, including transmission, transportation, oil and gas and other related industries. However, most of the company's income is derived from the sale of equipment for power generation, such as turbines, boilers, etc. As of 2017, BHEL supplied equipment that contributed around 55% of India's total installed power generation capacity. The company has also supplied thousands of electric locomotives to Indian Railway, as well as defense equipment such as Super Rapid Gun Mount naval weapons (SRGM) and Defense Simulators to the Indian Armed Forces.
