Metrology as defined by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) is "the science of measurement encompassing both theoretical and experimental determinations at any level of uncertainty in any field of science and technology." It establishes a common understanding of the units, crucial to link human activities. Modern metrology has its roots in the political motivation of the French Revolution to standardize units in France, when a standard of length taken from a natural source was proposed. This led to the creation of the metric system based on decimals in 1795, establishing a set of standards for other types of measurements. Several other countries adopted the metric system between 1795 and 1875; To ensure compliance among countries, the International Bureau of Poids and Mesures (BIPM) was established by the Metro Convention. This has become the International System of Units (SI) as a result of a resolution at the 11th General Conference of Poids et Mesures (CGPM) in 1960.
