Four buildings are described that save energy and explore the reasons for underground construction. Energy conservation is done to reduce energy consumption by using less of an energy service. This can be achieved by using energy more efficiently (using less energy for a constant service) or reducing the amount of services used (eg driving less). Conservation of energy is part of the concept of eco-sufficiency. Energy conservation reduces the need for energy services and can result in increased environmental quality, national security, personal financial security and greater savings. It is at the top of the sustainable energy hierarchy. It also reduces energy costs by preventing the depletion of future resources.
