Construction is a high risk industry comprising a wide range of activities related to construction, alteration and / or repair. Examples include residential construction, bridge building, road paving, excavation, demolition and large-scale painting. Construction workers participate in many activities that can expose them to serious hazards, such as falling from rooftops, unguarded machinery, being struck by heavy construction equipment, electrocutions, silica dust and asbestos.
Construction work is a dangerous job on the ground. Some construction work includes: construction of homes, roads, tree forts, workplaces and repair and maintenance of infrastructure. This job includes many dangerous tasks and conditions such as working with height, digging, noise, dust, power tools and equipment. The most common deaths are caused by four fatalities: falls, being struck by an object, electrocutions, and being trapped between two objects. Construction work has been increasing in developing and underdeveloped countries in recent years. With an increase in this type of work accidents work have increased. Professional deaths are people who die while they are at work or perform tasks related to work. Within the field of construction it is important to have safe construction sites.
By 2014, the United States had 4,679 fatal labor injuries, an incidence rate of 3.3 per 100,000 full-time workers. In the same year, fatal injuries in construction and extraction work increased by 5%. One in five worker fatalities in 2014 were construction related. Construction has about 6% of US workers, but 17% of deaths - the highest number of deaths reported for any industry sector. In the United Kingdom, the construction industry accounts for 31% of workplace deaths and 10% of injuries in the workplace. In South Africa there are 150 deaths and approximately 400 injuries each year related to construction sites. In Brazil, the incidence rate of all occupational deaths is 3.6 per 100,000. (Little or no information on deaths in construction could be found in Asia, South America, Africa and Antarctica.) The table below contains more countries and the death rate at the construction site.
