An industrial safety system is a crucial countermeasure in any hazardous plant like oil and gas plants and nuclear plants. They are used to protect human, industrial and environmental plants in case the process goes beyond the allowed control margins. As the name implies, these systems are not intended to control the process itself, but rather protection. Process control is performed by means of process control systems (PCS) and is interconnected by security systems so that immediate action is taken in case of failure of process control systems.
Process control and safety systems are usually combined under a system called the Integrated Security and Control System (ICSS). Industrial safety systems often use dedicated systems that are certified by SIL 2 as a minimum; while control systems can begin with SIL 1. SIL applies to both hardware and software requirements such as cards, redundancy of processors and voting functions.
The importance of industrial safety realized that every year millions of occupational / industrial accidents occur that produce losses of production time equivalent to millions of hours of work, machine hours, etc. Of these, about a fifth of the production time is lost by those effectively injured due to the temporary and permanent disability and the remaining production time is lost by other operators / persons in helping the injured, in the care of the damages caused by accident, to the industrial unit would seem much more alarming when considering cases of death by accidents.
It is therefore essential to identify / examine the causes of industrial accidents and to take measures to control them. Many disciplines address this security approach. Industrial engineering is a field that deals with the design of an efficient workplace, a team and an industrial layout design. Other disciplines that can contribute to a safe work environment are the psychology, sociology, and science of Medicare.
