Since September 2011, road safety has become a concern for governments around the world and numerous measures have been taken to strengthen safety in the transport sector, both internationally and at EU level. CORTE's experience in road safety can be divided into the following sectors:
• Aviation safety;
• Maritime safety;
• Border security;
• Critical infrastructure protection;
• Counter-terrorism intelligence (including cybersecurity and communication);
• Crisis management / civil protection;
• Physical security protection; Y
• Protective clothes.
The threat to safety on European roads has become concurrent as drivers; Vehicles and cargo are increasingly exploited for criminal activity. The reason that road transport offers an attractive option for criminals or terrorists is that a large percentage of trucks carry dangerous goods among which it is easy to hide the barred articles. In fact, the transport of dangerous goods is the most common security threat in Europe, although two directives have already been adopted in this respect; The transport of all dangerous goods and the transport of dangerous goods of high value. In addition, the events of 11 September and the subsequent terrorist attacks have revealed a whole new set of security issues in Europe, which are increasingly being tackled by the European Union.
At present, Member States are responsible for the control of their own borders and, therefore, security issues are also mainly within their exclusive competence. Recently, however, the European Commission has recognized that a common European security environment may be necessary in the fight against terrorism, trafficking, drug smuggling, illegal immigration, organized crime and other emerging threats. With this in mind, the Commission has launched a number of security programs and has actively supported security-related research projects. These are important steps in creating a common security framework, however, for the time being, the European safety net remains diverse and fragmented.
