4D Printing, developed as a collaboration between the Self-Assembly Lab, Stratasys and Auto-desk, is a new process for printing customizable intelligent materials. 4D printing involves multi-material printing using the Stratasys Connex printer with the additional shape-shifting capability from one state to another directly from the printing bed. This technique offers an aerodynamic path from idea to complete functionality built directly on materials, including; Acting, detection and material logic. Possible applications include; Robotics, without the dependence of complex electromechanical devices, as well as adaptive products, garments or mechanisms that respond to the demands of users and fluctuating environments.
With a single multi-material impression, a product or mechanism can be transformed from any 1D wire into 3D shape, 2D surface into 3D shape or change from one 3D shape to another. Using only water, heat, light or other simple energy input, this technique offers adaptability and dynamic response for structures and systems of all sizes.
