Several objectives associated with relay performance tests are identified; The means to achieve these objectives are described. A discussion of the test signals and the equipment used to produce them is provided to provide a better understanding of the test methods. Most of the discussion in the paper is general, with non-specific background information. Section 6.0 concludes with an example of a comprehensive test plan that illustrates many test approaches. These examples are not meant to be test guides. The information is included to show how a utility applied specific tests to ensure that the performance of the relay met the objectives of the application.
