Established in 1919 to develop and enforce labour law, the Ministry of Labour's mission is to promote safe, fair and harmonious workplace practices that are essential to the social and economic well-being of the Ontario population.
Through key areas of the ministry of occupational health and safety, labour rights and responsibilities, and labour relations, the ministry's mandate is to establish, communicate, and enforce workplace standards while encouraging greater self-reliance in the workplace of work. The Ministry also develops, coordinates and implements strategies to prevent injuries and illnesses in the workplace and can set standards for health and safety training.
