The Bayou architecture provides scalability, availability, extensibility, and adaptability features that address the database storage needs of global applications. In addition to discussing these characteristics, this article presents the Bayou mechanisms to allow replicas of a database to vary dynamically without global coordination. The key is the use of weak consistency replica between autonomous machines and strict adherence to the principle that no operation should involve more than two machines.
