Man has needed and used energy at an increasing rate for his sustenance and well-being since he came to earth a few million years ago. Primitive man needed energy mainly in the form of food. He derived it by eating plants or animals, which he hunted. He subsequently discovered the fire and his energy needs increased as he began to make use of wood and other bio mass to supply the energy needs for cooking as well as agriculture. He added a new dimension to the use of energy by taming and training animals to work for him.
With increased energy demand, man began to use wind for sailboats and to drive windmills, and force the water into failure to convert the water wheels. Up to this point, it would not be wrong to say that the sun was supplying all man's energy needs, directly or indirectly, and that man was using only renewable sources of energy. The industrial revolution, which began with the discovery of the steam engine (AD 1700), brought many changes. For the first time, man began to use a new source of energy, namely.
