Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM, formerly SMET) is a term that refers to the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The term is often used in addressing educational policy and curricular options in Schools to improve competitiveness in science and technology development. It has implications for the development of the workforce, national security concerns and immigration policy.
The acronym arose in common use shortly after an inter-agency meeting in science education held at the US National Science Foundation chaired by then-NSF director Rita Colwell. A director of the Division of Workforce Development for Professors and Scientists at the Office of Science, Peter Faletra, suggested switching from the earlier METS to STEM. Colwell, expressing some dislike for the older acronyms, responded by suggesting to NSF that he institute the change. One of NSF's earliest projects in using the acronym was STEMTEC, the collaboration in science education, technology, engineering and mathematics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which was funded in 1998.
