EFFECT OF OIL SPILL ON MARINE ENVIRONMENT

Among the many environmental problems that offend and concern us perhaps none is as powerful and dramatic as water pollution. It is any undesirable change in physical, biological or chemical characteristics of water quality that adversely affects living organisms or makes water unsuitable for desirable use. Major sources that pollute water are domestic sewage and industrial effluents, acid rain etc. These are discharged into the rivers which in turn results in marine pollution.Marine pollution has been going on unnoticed for a long time by the disposal of waste minerals, besides these in marine water the most serious pollutant is oil. Oil spills account for less than 15% of the total oil in the oceans but are probably the most obvious form of oil pollution. The impact of oil spills on coastal and marine environmental can be both short and long term.Environmental impact of oil spill an coastal habitat and on marine life, mechanical recovery of oil spill and disposal of recovered oil are described in this report.
