1. INTRODUCTION
Industrial plants (e.g. paper factories) has put continuous pressure on the
advanced process automation. The uninterrupted electricity distribution is one
basic requirement for the process. A disturbance in electricity supply causing a
shutdown of the process may cost huge amount of money. Thus the intelligent
management of electricity distribution including, for example, preventive
condition monitoring and on-line reliability management has a great importance.
In industrial processes a huge amount of energy is used, e.g. in Finland more than
50 % of energy is used in industry. Management of present and coming energy
use is in important role from economic and environmental point of view.
Nowadays the above needs have arisen the increased interest in the electricity
distribution automation and energy management of industrial plants.
This project for management of electrical systems in industrial plants consists of
four sections which have close connections to each other:
• management of data acquisition
• energy management applications
• distribution management system (DMS) for industrial networks
• preventive condition monitoring of electrical networks and drives
The main goal of project is to develop new methods, algorithms and applications
for the management of electrical systems in industrial plants.
Based on the results of project
a) the commercial products for distribution automation and energy management
can be developed
b) industrial companies will be able to
• have better knowledge of their use of energy
• improve their use of energy -> energy savings
• improve reliability of production and electrical processes -> increase of
production
• on-line monitoring of electrical state of electrical systems
• on line condition monitoring
