MANAGEMENT OF MINES AND MINERALS-A CASE STUDY WITH RESPECT TO STATE OF ORISSA
INTRODUCTION
Orissa is a maritime State on the East coast of India. It is the tenth largest state in terms of the geographical area and houses about 4% of india's population.But more than 40% of the population in the state live in poverty.Morphologywise, the state of Orissa can be divided into the following sections:
-Coastal Plains
-Middle Mountainous Country
-Rolling Upland
-River Valleys
-Subdued Plateau
MINERAL RESOURCE OF ORISSA
The state of Orissa occupies a prominent position in the India’s mineral-map. Vast reserves of minerals like Chromite, Nickel, Bauxite, Iron-Ore and Coal are present in the state. China Clay, Fire Clay, Lime Stone, Quartz, Precious and Semi-Precious Stones, Copper, Manganese, Graphite, Titanium, Vanadium etc are also present in significant amounts in the state.Due to these reasons, a number of mineral based industries have come up in Orissa. Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), Aluminium Plants by INDAL and National Aluminium Company (NALCO), etc are only a few to specify.
