The tangent galvanometer was first described in an 1837 article by Claude-Servais-Mathias Pouillet (1790-1868), who later used this sensitive form of galvanometer to verify Ohm's law. To use the galvanometer, it is first configured on a level surface and the coil is aligned with the north-south magnetic direction. This means that the needle of the compass in the middle of the coil is parallel to the plane of the coil when it is not carrying current. The current to be measured is now sent through the coil, and produces a magnetic field, perpendicular to the plane of the coil, and directly proportional to the current. They were the first instruments used to detect and measure small amounts of electric currents. André-Marie Ampère, who gave mathematical expression to the discovery of Ørsted and appointed him by the Italian electricity researcher Luigi Galvani, who in 1791 discovered the principle of the frogs galvanoscope, that electric current would cause the legs of a dead frog to shake.
