Transparent smartphones allow us to see through the phone and what is displayed on the glass screen. This technology has existed in the last two or three decades. But only since 2012 is being incorporated by corporate companies such as Samsung, Planar systems etc. These smartphones will enhance our world views with digital images superimposed on the real ones.
Working:
Transparent smartphones are being designed using OLED and LCD technologies.
OLED Technology:
The organic light emitting diode (OLED) has an emissive electroluminescent layer made of organic compound that emits light in response to the electric current. This layer is placed between two organic semiconductor electrodes, with at least one of the electrodes being transparent. This has an emissive and conductive layer where the electric pulse travels from the conductive layer to the emitter layer.
LCD SCREENS:
This technology can not be seen through its thickness and because of its inability to emit light on its own. But liquid crystal technology can be used by back-lighting. When the energy is off, the liquid crystal molecules are in a random orientation and disperse the incident light. And when the power is on, the molecules are arranged in a line and allow light to pass through them. This technology is the cheap alternative to OLED technology.
