Pallivasal is a village in the Idukki district in the Indian state of Kerala. The first hydroelectric project in Kerala was established in Pallivasal during the reign of Maharajah Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. The Pallivasal electric project was commissioned in 1940. The Kerala electricity transmission system also emerged in 1940 with the 66 kV line from Pallivasal to Thiruvananthapuram, and eight substations were also commissioned in 1940. At the 2001 India census , Pallivasal had a population of 11,759 with 5965 males and 5794 females.
The State Department of Electricity was formed in 1933, when work began on the first Kerala hydroelectric plant in Pallivasal, a town in the southwestern part of the Idukki district. On March 19, 1940, Mr. C P Ramaswamy Aiyer, the Dewan of Travancore inaugurated the first stage of the Pallivasal project, which had an initial installed capacity of 13.5 MW. It was the first hydroelectric project in Kerala, created to meet the energy needs of the general public. The State Electricity Department also assumed control of the 200 kw power plant, set up in 1928 by the Kannan Devan Hill Produce Co. The Pallivasal project currently has a capacity of 37.5 MW (3x5 + 3x7.5). The renewal of the project was completed in 2002. In order to maximize the available water, a new 60 MW Pallivasal Extension Scheme (PES) project is being built.
