For centuries, the medical profession has been aided in its diagnosis of certain type of heart disorders by the sounds and vibrations associated with beating of heart and the pumping of blood. The technology of listening to the sounds produced by the organs and vessels of the body is called auscultation. This paper proposes a new phonocardiogram machine that can listen to the heart sounds of a human being, analyzes the waveform and alerts the person in case of abnormality and also sends intimation to the nearest hospital. i.e.an automated abnormality alerting device. The conventional PCG, electrocardiography and ultrasound are relatively efficient but at the same time very expensive, they are not automated and require a trained technician for diagnosis. The primary purpose of this paper is to provide a non-expensive alternative to the above devices and to provide an automatic alert in case of abnormality
The proposed machine makes use of simple electronic components for the sound signal conditioning and a micro-controller is employed which compares the sound waveform of the person undergoing test with the sound waveform of the normal person that is already stored in the controller memory. If the difference in value exceeds the threshold value (stored in memory), the alerting device is triggered. An intimate about the abnormality can also be given to the family doctor or the nearest hospital through internet or transmitter-receiver module. The machine can also be interfaced to a computer to view the heart sound waveform for diagnosis using sound-wave editor software called audacity. The waveform can also be displayed on a digital storage oscilloscope for lab purpose.
The main application of this device is in the rural medical camps where advanced facilities are not available. The device can be used for simple diagnosis and as a self-alerting device. It can be also used as a patient monitoring system.
