Environmental engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the application of scientific and engineering principles to protect human populations from the effects of adverse environmental factors; Protection of both local and global environments from the potentially harmful effects of natural and human activities; And improved environmental quality. Environmental engineering can also be described as a branch of applied science and technology that deals with issues of energy conservation, production assets and the control of waste from human and animal activities. In addition, it seeks to find plausible solutions in the field of public health, such as waterborne diseases, implementing laws that promote adequate sanitation in urban, rural and recreational areas. It involves wastewater management, air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, animal husbandry, environmental sustainability, public health and environmental engineering law . It also includes studies on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.

Environmental engineers study the effect of technological advances on the environment. To this end, they conduct studies on the management of hazardous wastes to assess the importance of such hazards, advise on treatment and containment and develop regulations to prevent setbacks. Environmental engineers design municipal systems for water supply and industrial wastewater treatment. They address local and global environmental issues such as the effects of acid rain, global warming, ozone depletion, water pollution and air pollution from automobile exhaust pipes and industrial sources. Many colleges offer environmental engineering programs in the civil engineering department or the chemical engineering department in engineering colleges. Environmental "civilian" engineers focus on hydrology, water resource management, bioremediation and the design of water treatment plants. On the other hand, "chemical" chemical engineers focus on environmental chemistry, advanced air and water treatment technologies and separation processes.
