PLASMATRON FUEL CONVERTER
ABSTRACT
Development of new systems for controlling the pollution from the internal combustion engines are needed to meet future environmental quality goals. Plasmatron fuel converters have been developed to produce hydrogen which helps in reducing emission. These compact plasmatron devices help in providing highly controllable electrical heating of ionized fuel-air mixtures resulting in the production of hydrogen-rich gas. The electricity required by the plasmatron is provided by a generator. The generator is driven by the engine. Plasmatron fuel converters help in converting a wide range of hydrocarbon fuels into hydrogen-rich gas. Adding hydrogen as an additive in gasoline fuels decreases NOx pollution from the internal combustion engine by enabling engine to have a very lean operation. If certain requirements are met, it may also be possible to achieve higher spark ignition engine efficiencies. These requirements include the attainment of ultra lean, high compression ratio, open throttle operation using only a modest amount of hydrogen addition. For diesel engines, use of compact plasmatron reforms to produce hydrogen-rich gas for the regeneration of NOx absorber/ adsorbers and particulate traps for diesel engine exhaust after treatment could provide significant advantages.
