The diesel power plant is designed for base load operation for stationary applications and is intended for the production of electricity in parallel operation with a public supply as well as with island mode operation. In this paper the case study of the Tata thermal power plant is presented. The capacity of the plant is 81.3MW. The power plant is equipped with five generator sets consisting of a WATSILA 18V46 as the primary motor driving an ABBAMG 1600SS12DSEB three-phase, brushless, self-cooled synchronous generator. The capacity of each DG is 16.26MW. The plant is designed to run on heavy fuel oil (HFO) with light fuel (LFO) as backup fuel. Fuel is being received by tankers from the nearest oil terminal at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL). HFO's annual consumption for the plant would be about 0.110 million tonnes. The power plant in the field of power generation and distribution which maintains environmentally friendly environment by adopting green belt design according to Karnataka State Pollution Control Board Directive (KSPCB). Following the generally recognized diesel maintenance procedures and manufacturer-specific recommendations will ensure that the standby power system will start and run when most needed.
Applications of the diesel power plant
1. The diesel power plant is in the range of 2 to 50 MW capacity. They are used as a central station for small or medium power supplies.
2. They can be used as backup plants for hydroelectric power stations and steam power stations for emergency services.
3. They can be used as plants of maximum load in combinations with thermal or hydroelectric plants.
4. They are quite suitable for mobile power generation and are widely used in transportation systems such as automobiles, railroads, airplanes and boats.
5. Now-a-day power outage has become a regular feature for industries. The only solution to overcome this difficulty is the installation of diesel generators.
