Megger the Ohmmeter
The quality of the insulation resistance of an electrical system is degraded over time, the condition of the environment, ie temperature, humidity, moisture and dust particles. It is also negatively impacted by the presence of electrical and mechanical voltage, so it is very necessary to check the insulation resistance of the equipment at a constant constant interval to avoid any deadly measure or an electric shock.
Megger is a portable instrument that is used to measure the insulation resistance of the machinery or electrical system. It can be operated by battery or mechanically (hand cc crankshaft generator) and gives direct reading in ohms. For this reason it is also called as ohm meter. Aboard the ship, different systems are present with large voltage ratings and therefore Megger comes in the range of 100V to 5000V.

Building
The important constructive characteristics of Megger consist of the following parts:
1. Control coil and deflection coil: Normally mounted at right angles to each other and connected in parallel to the generator. The polarities are such that the pair produced by them is in the opposite direction.
2. Permanent magnet: Permanent magnet with north and south poles to produce magnetic effect for the deviation of the pointer.
3. Pointer and Scale: A pointer is attached to the coils and the pointer end floats on a scale that is in the range of "zero" to "infinite". The unit for this is "ohms".
4. D.C generator or battery connection: Test voltage is supplied with D.C hand generator for manual Megger and a battery and electronic voltage charger for automatic type Megger.
5. Coil of pressure and coil of current: Provided to prevent damage to the instrument in case of low resistance of the external source.
