Stethoscopes are used to listen to acoustic signals from the internal organs of the human body. Although stethoscopes play a very important role in the diagnostic process, it is known that the thoracic part and the connecting cable facilitate the transmission of pathogens from patient to patient and from patient to user. Replacing the connecting cable with a wireless system can help reduce the potential risk and also allow the broadcasting of signals to multiple users for examination. This paper reports on the design of a Bluetooth-based two-piece wireless system that eliminates connection cables in electronic stethoscopes.
The design consists of a built-in chest module for the transmission of captured acoustic sound and a microcontroller-based header receiver module (MSP430) for decoding data from the three operating modes of the stethoscope. The design was first tested with a chirp signal source with a frequency of 10 Hz to 5 kHz. The results obtained for the three operating frequency bands of the stethoscope were consistent with the expected behavior of the stethoscope.
The stethoscope is an acoustic medical device to listen to internal sounds in the human body that is known, in medical terms, as auscultation. The auscultation of cardiac sound is one of the most basic ways of assessing the state of cardiac function. Some research concluded that an abnormal profile of heart rate during exercise and recovery is a predictor of sudden death. Because the incidence of cardiovascular disease increased year by year, heart-related cardiovascular disease has become the common global disease and high prevalence.
As a result of the development of wireless technology, the diagnosis based on heart sound analysis will become a new method for diagnosing cardiovascular diseases. Anh Dinh and Tao Wang had processed the heartbeat signal and sent it wirelessly using the Zigbee protocol. Some electronic stethoscopes using Bluetooth for wireless transmission are designed. On the receiver side, the cardiac signal can be reproduced in the handset and can be stored on the PC or PDA.
