Operating System:-
Operating Systems (OS) are software programs that control thousands of operations, provide an interface between the user and the computer, and run applications.
An OS is designed to control the operations of programs such as web browsers, word processors, and e-mail programs.
•A program or a software that governs the functioning of other programs
•Interface between User and the Hardware
•Allocates resources for tasks
•A program that controls the execution of application programs
•An interface between applications and hardware
•Controls the devices

Operating System
What is a Live CD Operating System

• A Live CD is a computer operating system that is executed upon boot, without installation to a hard disk drive.

• The concept of a Live CD can be applied across many mediums: Floppy, CD, DVD, USB, all which can be used to boot from, without installing on your hard drive

• A live CD, live DVD, or live disc is a CD or DVD containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, modern operating system on a computer lacking mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive. Live USB flash drives are similar to live CDs, but often have the added functionality of automatically and transparently writing changes back to their bootable medium.

• The term "live" derives from the fact that these CDs each contain a complete, functioning and operational operating system on the distribution medium.

• While a live CD typically does not alter any operating system or files already installed on a computer's secondary storage (such as hard disk drives), many live CDs include mechanisms and utilities for altering the host computer's data stores, including installation of an operating system. This is important for the system management aspect of live CDs, such as removing malware, drive imaging, and system recovery.
• The default option, however, is to allow the user to return the computer to its previous state when the live CD is ejected and the computer is rebooted. It is able to run without permanent installation by placing the files that typically would be stored on a hard drive into RAM, typically in a RAM disk, though this does cut down on the RAM available to applications.
Reasons to use a Live CD

• Testing a new version or flavor of Linux
• Determine compatibility of a particular hardware configuration.
• System repair and restoration (Rescue Windows)
• Network security testing
• A fall back when a hard drive fails
• Password Recovery

What is linux….?

Linux, a UNIX clone, is an operating system that embodies the concept of complete transparency. One of the most important aspects of Linux is that it has been developed and supported by its users, making it relatively easy to get your hands on one of the many free Linux distributions. But although Linux is growing in popularity, there are still people who consider this operating system a toy or pet; something to play with, but not to be taken seriously.

Welcome to the mirror for Slax Linux
Slax is a modern, portable, small and fast Linux operating system with a modular approach and outstanding design.

• Despite its small size, Slax provides a wide collection of pre-installed software for daily use, including a well organized graphical user interface and useful recovery tools for system administrators.

• The modular approach gives you the ability to include any other software in Slax easily.

• If you're missing your favourite text editor, networking tool or game, simply download a module with the software and copy it to Slax, no need to install, no need to configure.

• The primary goal of SLAX is to provide a wide collection of useful software while keeping the cd's image small enough to be written to a 185 MB CD-R(W) medium .

• SLAX boots directly from the CD or USB devices and it provides a full featured Linux operating system without requiring installation onto the user's hard drive
• SLAX is a small, live Linux distro, based on linux . It aims to be light, friendly and useful.

• All your available partitions and data storage devices (CD-ROM, USB storage devices, etc.) should be recognized at boot and should be mounted to /mnt/xx. As an example, "disc0part1" may be assigned to the first partition on your primary hard drive, "disc1part1" for your USB storage device, or "cdrom0" for your CD-ROM drive. SLAX will never write anything to the mounted devices. Mounting is safe and does not change
After booting, you should be able to login as a "root", with the password "toor" both without quotes, of course.

When logged in, you have many options. At the shell prompt, you may start Midnight Commander (type "mc" to the console), play some music from your hard drive (type "play /mnt/path/file.mp3"), adjust your audio volume (type "alsamixer"), configure IP address (type "netconfig") or browse web pages with the text-based browser (type "lynx http://url").

To start the graphical environment included with SLAX, type "gui" (for graphical user interface). It will attempt to autoconfigure your graphics card, monitor, keyboard and mice, and if successful it will run an X session with KDE. I'm pretty sure that you will know how to get around at this point. :-) Use "guisafe" instead of "gui" for safe-mode (VESA framebuffer) without autodetection.

In the unfortunate case your mouse doesn't work, try to move it for a few seconds to see if it will be autodetected. If it isn't, shut down Xwindow (press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) and start it again. If this won't help then you are using something I have not included in the
• autoconfiguration process (COM2 mouse?). If you are comfortable with bash, or you atleast understand how to make your favorite mouse function under Linux, try to modify the symbolic page link /dev/mouse manually.

If you don't like the autoconfigured screen resolution, refresh rate, or the K Desktop Environment, start "gui" with some additional options. Try for example "gui 800x600 60", where 800x600 is the desired screen resolution and 60 is the desired refresh rate. Fluxbox is one of the other window managers included and may be called with "guifast" or "gui fluxbox". In any event, type "gui --help" for more information.

All scripts and source code are available and can be used to build your own Live CD.

SLAX is available as an ISO image of the CD. It fits on small 8cm CD-R(W). Burn it with your favorite cd-writing software and then boot from the CD.

You might want to check your BIOS to assure it's set to boot the CD prior the disc.

SLAX CD contains:
1. KDE 3.3.1
2. KOffice 1.3.3
3. KDE games
4. MPlayer 1.0pre5 with KPlayer
5. Kopete ICQ/AIM/Y!/IRC
6. Midnight commander
7.k3b burning GUI for KDE
8. mutt email client
..and much more...

Requirements:

SLAX is not pretentious, nevertheless it requires some minimal hardware to run properly. It depends what do you wish to use SLAX for, of course. The most important thing is memory. You need at least 30 MB of RAM to boot slax. More detailed description follows:

Medium

• either IDE connected CDROM (to boot from the CD)
• or USB FlashDisk (to boot from the mass storage device)
• or maybe some harddisk (to boot SLAX from the disk)
BIOS

• either non-emulation booting enabled (to boot from the CD)
• or USB FlashDrive booting enabled (to boot from the mass storage device)

Memory

• 30 MB to boot slax.
• 64 MB to run Xwindow with fluxbox (guifast)
• 128 MB to run Xwindow with KDE (gui or guisafe)

Processor

• i486 or better, Pentium or AMD are both OK.

Peripheral devices

• some keyboard
• PS/2 or USB connected mouse (required for Xwindow only)
• serial (COM) mouse is not automatically recognized, but can be used

• Hard disk

• No harddisk is required

Goal of slax
• The primary goal of SLAX is to provide a wide collection of useful software while keeping the cd's image small enough to be written to a 185 MB CD-R(W) medium .

• SLAX boots directly from the CD or USB devices and it provides a full featured Linux operating system without requiring installation onto the user's hard drive

• SLAX is a small, live Linux distro, based on linux . It aims to be light, friendly and useful.

FOSS

• Free Open Source Software

• Free – Means Liberty and not related to Price or cost

• Open – Source code is available and any body can contribute to the development. Organization independent

Open Source Software

• Open Source Software (OSS) generally refers to software for which the source code is available and which the licensing scheme permits the user to modify it and redistribute it in modified or unmodified form.

• Nobody should be restricted by the software they use. There are four freedoms that every user should have:
• the freedom to use the software for any purpose,
• he freedom to change the software to suit your needs,
• the freedom to share the software with your friends and neighbors, and
• the freedom to share the changes you make.

Impressions

SLAX boots quickly into a beautiful, well-laid desktop. The choice of colors and fonts is smart and inobtrusive. The bottom panel has shortcuts for several most important applications. Overall, SLAX has a clean, fresh feel.
MP3 playback support

• The first thing I checked was whether SLAX could play my "Windows" music. Using Konqueror to search the Network was easy. SLAX found the Windows machines without any issues.

• The NTFS share was mounted without problems. I could both read from and write to it. The three test files were soon located in the home directory.

Windows video

• The next test was the home-made moron movie, which you have probably seen in other reviews. The video played all right,

• SLAX seemed to lack the right codecs to play this nebulous format correctly - however encoded by my Canon digital camera.

flash
• Flash worked well. Youtube showed me the movies I wanted. But even more importantly,

• KPlayer played locally saved Flash (.flv) files without any issues.

Wireless

• I had trouble connecting to either of my two WPA-enabled routers.
• Even trying to connect to the neighbor-happy default access point proved to be too tricky.

• SLAX simply refused to network wirelessly, even on my four-year old T42.

Application

The assortment of programs included with the distro is not large.

But it is well balanced and quite sufficient for most people. You get the usual lot, including many standard K applications - and some unique ones.

Slax modules

• One of the really strong sides of SLAX are its modules. These are files that you can download and configure to run on top of your SLAX, even while booted in the live CD session, no installation or configuration required! Sounds incredible.
• And it's really that simple. Just head to the SLAX website, search for the modules that you want, activate them, and that's it!
• And within minutes, you'll have your applications running!
