There are several all linked and all the symptoms of a single cause. The cause is overpopulation. We have a finite planet with finite resources exhausted and continue to use as if they were infinite.
The main ones I see are the lack of potable water, the desalination is expensive,. Depletion of fossil fuel reserves. After each previous accident there has been a civilization that knowledge has survived and a source of energy to restart from.
Others are phosphate depletion that could reduce yields by half. Finally, there is climate change. This could become fugitive and leave vast areas of the planet uninhabitable and in such a state could take several million years to correct.
There are solutions, but none of them are pleasant, so I suspect that we are living at the end of the good times and civilization will collapse within a hundred and as we are globally linked there can be no way back this time. If we can not keep the network running. Cheap fuel that is going to power will have to be diverted to sustainable sources and industry and away from personal comfort and transportation. I think we may need a mix of nuclear and renewable energy with novel solutions for energy storage. There is no way forward, but without population reduction there is no way forward. Reduction figures should target a long-term sustainable population of less than 1 trillion with reproduction of a privelidge not a right. During the transition I suspect that there will be euthanasia and infanticide and a shortage of massive labor.
