Job Title: STUDENT OMBUDSPERSON
Department: Student Life
Reports To: Coordinator for Student Judicial/Student Ombudsperson
FLSA Status: Nonexempt
Salary: Commensurate with Education & Experience
Starting Date: Immediately
Closing Date: Open until filled. Screening to begin October 5, 2009

SUMMARY: The Student Ombudsperson provides guidance to the South Texas College community regarding college protocol and procedures and assists students in resolving disputes and conflicts in a way that facilitates individual responsibility, contributes to their maturation, and promotes the development of self-advocacy skills.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Serves as primary contact to receive student complaints, appeals and inquiries regarding the complaint and appeal processes
2. Facilitates student retention by serving as a mediator and creative problem-solver; promotes the development of critical thinking skills by helping students act on their own behalf in resolving conflicts
3. Educates students, faculty and staff regarding College complaint and appeal procedures through individual consultation, workshops, class presentations and the development and distribution of instructional materials
4. Reviews and recommends policy and procedures as appropriate in relation to the complaint and appeal processes
5. Conducts surveys and focus groups to determine areas of student concern
6. Participates in department strategic planning process and in development of department procedure manual; assists Coordinator for Judicial Affairs/Student Ombudsperson in the development, implementation and collection, analysis and reporting of program data for Institutional Effectiveness plan
7. Submits monthly and yearly activity reports to the Coordinator for Judicial Affairs/ Student Ombudsperson
8. Promotes positive morale and teamwork within the department
9. Greets students, faculty and general public in a pleasant manner and always demonstrates excellent customer service
10. Attends and participates in College sponsored events
11. Participates and serves on College committees as assigned
12. Keeps the college informed about problem or conflict areas
13. Provides mediation and other informal intervention to resolve conflicts; develops informational and materials for student use
14. Educates students about college policies, procedures, and instructional resources available to them
15. Promote the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills by helping students act on their own behalf in resolving conflicts
16. Manages confidential information in most discreet manner
17. Performs other tasks as assigned by the Coordinator for Judicial Affairs/Student
Ombudsperson

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 5. Ability to grasp the knowledge and be adept in implementing South Texas College policies, procedures and programs
6. Team player with the ability to work independently
7. Ability to maintain confidentiality

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
*Bachelor's degree required
*Minimum two years relevant experience in a higher education setting is preferred
*Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of students or employees of organization.
