Catalytic converter
A catalytic converter is an exhaust emission control device that converts toxic and polluting gases into the exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine to less toxic contaminants by catalyzing a redox reaction (an oxidation and a reaction of reduction). Catalytic converters are used with internal combustion engines fueled by gasoline (petrol) or diesel, including lean combustion engines, as well as kerosene heaters and stoves.
The first widespread introduction of catalytic converters was in the US auto market. To comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency's stringent exhaust emission regulations, most gasoline vehicles from the 1975 model year must be equipped with catalytic converters. These "bi-directional" converters combine oxygen with carbon monoxide (CO) and unburned hydrocarbons (HC) to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). In 1981, two-way catalytic converters became obsolete by "three-way" converters that also reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx), however, two-way converters are still used for lean combustion engines. This is because three-way converters require rich or stoichiometric combustion to successfully reduce NOx.
Although catalytic converters are most commonly applied to exhaust systems in automobiles, they are also used in electric generators, forklifts, mining equipment, trucks, buses, locomotives and motorcycles. They are also used in some wood stoves to control emissions. This is generally in response to government regulation, either through direct environmental regulation or through health and safety standards. A catalytic converter has to be changed every 100 000/120 000 km to be efficient. It is important to recycle this part of the car.
Aqua Silencer
Aqua Silencer is a modified version of a conventional muffler aimed at reducing the toxic exhaust emission of an IC engine to the atmosphere and also to reduce noise that is produced by the damping methods involved in water and therefore name. It incorporates the use of cheap chemicals such as lime water, activated carbon and water with the help of a simple yet effective change in the design and manufacture of the muffler to reduce noise and toxic emission levels.
An Aqua Silencer mainly deals with emission control and noise in the engine exhaust. It basically consists of a perforated tube that is installed at the exhaust outlet of the engine, which may have holes of varying diameters. This is done to divide large gas molecules to form smaller diameter gas molecules. Theoretically, four or more sets of holes are made in the perforated tube by drilling. The other end of the perforated tube is sealed using a stopper.
