The "wedge" method to generate guided waves in isotropic layers was analyzed both theoretically and experimentally by Viktorov et. in 1965. The main parts of the work were reproduced later in Viktorov's famous book on Rayleigh and Lamb waves. Of several detailed observations made in these investigations, one was that: for the optimal generation of a given wave number mode, k, the angle of the wedge must be "in the neighborhood" of the angle of Snell's law, ( (i) = 1 (k / kw), where kw represents the wave number of the wave in the wedge, such a choice of angle of incidence was used by experimenters using Lamb waves for non-destructive evaluation purposes even before In those cases strictly academic or approximate to real experimental conditions, Snell's law is exactly fulfilled as a result of the theory of reflection / refraction of flat (infinite) waves in plane interfaces. result of the satisfaction of the conditions of contour throughout (infinity) interface.
