Wayanad
Featured here is the first of the four trails in the northern district of Wayanad conceived and promoted by the Wayanad Tourism Organization (WTO) an organization which takes the leading role in fostering a responsible and sustainable tourism culture in Wayanad.
Of the four trails, we want to first introduce the "Outdoor Trail", which would cover the following places in the Wayanad District.
Chembra Peak
At an altitude of 2100 meters, the imposing Pico Chembra is located near Meppadi in the southern part of Wayanad. It is the highest peak in the region and climbing this peak would test your physical prowess. The rise of the Chembra peak is an exciting experience, as each stage of the climb unfolds large stretches of Wayanad and the view becomes wider as you go to its summit. Going up and down the peak would take a full day. Those who want to camp at the top are sure to have an unforgettable experience.
Those requiring camp equipment can contact the Tourism Promotion Council, located in Kalpetta in Wayanad.
Neelimala
Located in the southeast part of Wayanad, and accessible from Kalpetta as well as Sulthan Bathery, Neelimala is a delight for hikers, with options for different hiking trails. At the top of Neelimala, the view is breathtaking overlooking the Meenmutty Falls located nearby and the valley in the foreground.
Meenmutty Waterfalls
Located near Neelimala the spectacular Meenmutty waterfalls can be reached via a 2 km trekking route from the main road connecting Ootty and Wayanad. It is the largest of the waterfalls in the Wayanad district, and adds to the curiosity with its three stage falls falling from about 300 meters.
Chethalayam
However, another waterfall that draws visitors to Wayanad is the Chethalayam Falls, located near Sulthan Bathery in the northern part of Wayanad. This waterfall is smaller in size compared to Meenmutty. The falls and surrounding areas are ideal hiking spots and a haven for birdwatchers.
Pakshipathalam
Pakshipathalam is located deep within the forest in the Brahmagiri hills at an altitude of more than 1700 meters. The region comprises predominantly large rocks, some of them really massive. The deep caves found here are home to a wide variety of birds, animals and distinctive plant species. Pakshipathalam is located near Mananthavady and a visit to the region would require a 7 km trek through the woods, from Thirunelli. Visitors to Pakshipathalam should seek permission from the North DFO-Wayanad.
Banasura Sagar Dam
The dam at Banasura Sagar is considered the largest dam on earth in India. The dam is located in the southwestern part of the Wayanad district and is close to Lake Karalad. The Banasura Sagar dam project area also has the starting point for walks to the Banasura peak. An interesting feature is a set of islands that were formed when the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas.
While enjoying the captivating views, sounds and fragrance of Wayanad, you can also purchase some of Wayanad's specialties such as spices, coffee, tea, bamboo products, honey and herbal plants.
