The water say it is life, and in fact they were right. With about 70% of the land cover being water, it undoubtedly becomes one of our greatest resources. As young students, we learned about the various ways of conserving water; Come to think of it, water is used in almost all important human tasks and processes. It is an important element in the domestic as well as the industrial. However, closer inspection of our water resources today, give us a rude shock. Infested with debris ranging from plastic floating bags to chemical waste, our bodies of water have become a pool of poison. Pollution of bodies of water in simpler words means water pollution. Therefore the abuse of lakes, ponds, oceans, rivers, reservoirs, etc. is water pollution. Water pollution occurs when substances that modify the water negatively discharge into it. This discharge of contaminants can be direct and indirect.
Water pollution is a frightening problem, powerful enough to lead the world on a path of destruction. Water is an easy solvent, allowing most contaminants to dissolve easily and contaminate. The most basic effect of water pollution is directly suffered by organisms and vegetation that survive in water, including amphibians. At the human level, several people die every day due to the consumption of contaminated and infected water. According to the Economist report (dated 2008) every day over 1000 children die of diarrheal disease in India and numbers have only risen alarmingly in the last five years. Water is contaminated by both natural and man-made activities. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. Are known to alter and pollute water, also affecting ecosystems that survive underwater. Water pollution occurs when contaminants (particles, chemicals or substances that pollute water) are discharged directly or indirectly into bodies of water without sufficient treatment to dispose of harmful compounds. Contaminants enter the water mainly by human causes or human factors.
