Water pollution is the contamination of bodies of water (eg lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). This form of environmental degradation occurs when pollutants are discharged directly or indirectly into bodies of water without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Water pollution can be defined in many ways. It usually means that one or more substances have accumulated in the water to such an extent that they cause problems for animals or people. Oceans, lakes, rivers and other inland waters can naturally clean a certain amount of pollution by dispersing it harmlessly. If you pour a mug of black ink into a river, the ink will quickly disappear into the much greater volume of clean river water. The ink would still be there in the river, but in such a low concentration that I would not be able to see it. At such low levels, chemicals in ink would probably not present any real problem. However, if you pour gallons of ink into a river every few seconds through a pipe, the river will quickly turn black. The chemicals in the ink could very quickly have an effect on the quality of the water. This, in turn, could affect the health of all plants, animals and humans whose lives depend on the river.

Sources of Water Pollution

There are several classifications of water pollution. The two main sources of water pollution can be seen as Point and Non Point.

Point refers to the pollutants that belong to a single source. An example of this would be emissions from factories in the water.

Non Point means pollutants emitted from multiple sources. Contaminated water after rainfall across several regions can also be considered as a non-point source of pollution.

Causes of water pollution

The following are the main causes of water pollution:

1. Industrial Waste:

Industries produce a huge amount of waste containing toxic and polluting chemicals that can cause air pollution and damage to us and our environment. They contain contaminants such as lead, mercury, sulfur, asbestos, nitrates and many other harmful chemicals. Many industries do not have a proper waste management system and drain debris into fresh water entering rivers, canals and later into the sea. Toxic chemicals have the ability to change the color of water, increase the amount of minerals, also known as eutrophication, change water temperature and pose a serious danger to aquatic organisms.

2. Wastewater and wastewater:

Wastewater and wastewater produced by each household are chemically treated and released into the sea with fresh water. Water from wastewater carries harmful bacteria and chemicals that can cause serious health problems. Pathogens are known as common water pollutants; City sewers contain several pathogens and therefore diseases. Microorganisms in water are known to be the causes of some very deadly diseases and become the breeding ground for other creatures that act as carriers. These carriers inflict these diseases through various forms of contact on an individual. A very common example of this process would be Malaria.

3. Mining activities:

Mining is the process of rock crushing and extraction of coal and other minerals from the subsoil. These elements when extracted in the raw form contain harmful chemicals and can increase the amount of toxic elements when mixed with water which can lead to health problems. Mining activities emit various metal scrap and sulphide from rocks and is harmful to water.

4. Marine discharge:

Garbage produced by each household in the form of paper, aluminum, rubber, glass, plastic, food if collected and deposited at sea in some countries. These items take from 2 weeks to 200 years to decompose. When these elements enter the sea, they not only cause water pollution but also damage animals at sea.

5. Accidental oil spill:

The oil spill raises a lot of concern as a large amount of oil enters the sea and does not dissolve with water; There it opens up the problem for local marine wildlife such as sea fish, birds and otters. For example, a vessel carrying large quantities of oil can spill oil if it encounters an accident and can cause variable damage to species in the ocean depending on the amount of oil spill, ocean size, and toxicity of the pollutant.

6. Fossil fuel burning:

Fossil fuels such as coal and oil when burned produce a substantial amount of ash in the atmosphere. Particles that contain toxic chemicals when mixed with water vapor result in acid rain. In addition, carbon dioxide is released from the burning of fossil fuels that give rise to global warming.

7. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides:

Farmers use chemical fertilizers and pesticides to protect crops from insects and bacteria. They are useful for the growth of plants. However, when these chemicals are mixed with water they produce harmful to plants and animals. In addition, when it rains, chemicals mix with rainwater and flow into rivers and canals that represent severe damage to aquatic animals.

8. Sewer Lines Leakage:

A small drain of sewer lines can contaminate groundwater and make it unfit for people to drink. In addition, when not repaired in time, leaky water can reach the surface and become a breeding ground for insects and mosquitoes.

9. Global warming:

An increase in the earth's temperature due to the greenhouse effect gives rise to global warming. It increases water temperature and causes death of aquatic animals and marine species, which later results in water pollution.

10. Radioactive waste:

Nuclear energy is produced by fission or nuclear fusion. The element used in the production of nuclear energy is uranium, which is a highly toxic chemical. Nuclear waste produced by radioactive material must be disposed of to prevent any nuclear accident. Nuclear waste can have serious environmental hazards if not disposed of properly. Few major accidents have already occurred in Russia and Japan.

11. Urban development:
As the population has grown, the demand for housing, food and fabrics has also increased. As more cities and towns develop, fertilizer use has increased to produce more food, soil erosion due to deforestation, increased construction activities, inadequate collection and treatment of sewage, landfills at As more garbage is produced, to produce more materials.

12. Landfill Leakage:
Landfills are nothing more than a huge pile of garbage that produces a horrible odor and can be seen throughout the city. When it rains, landfills can leave and landfills can contaminate groundwater with a wide variety of contaminants.

13. Animal waste:

Waste products produced from animals are washed in rivers when it rains. It is mixed with other harmful chemicals and causes various waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, jaundice, dysentery and typhoid fever.

14. Underground storage leaks:

Transportation of coal and other petroleum products through underground pipelines is well known. Accidental leakage can occur at any time and can cause damage to the environment and cause soil erosion. Water contaminants also include organic and inorganic factors. Organic factors include volatile organic compounds, fuels, waste from trees, plants, etc. Inorganic factors include ammonia, chemical waste from factories, discarded cosmetics, etc. Water that travels through the fields is often contaminated with all forms of waste, on the road. This infected water reaches our bodies of water and sometimes the seas that endanger the flora, fauna and humans that use it along its path.

The current scenario has led to an awareness of water preservation and efforts are being made at various levels to redeem our water resources. Industries and factory facilities are restricted from contaminating water bodies and are advised to treat their contaminated waste by filtration methods. People are investing in rainwater harvesting projects to collect rainwater and preserve it in wells below ground level.
