Abstract

Washing machines are a common feature today in the Indian household. The most important utility a customer can derive from a washing machine is that he saves the effort he/she had to put in brushing, agitating and washing the cloth. Most of the people wouldn’t have noticed (but can reason out very well) that different type of cloth need different amount of washing time which depends directly on the type of dirt, amount of dirt, cloth quality etc. The washing machines that are used today (the one not using fuzzy logic control) serves all the purpose of washing, but which cloth needs what amount of agitation time is a business which has not been dealt with properly. In most of the cases either the user is compelled to give all the cloth same agitation or is provided with a restricted amount of control. The thing is that the washing machines used are not as automatic as they should be and can be. This paper aims at presenting the idea of controlling the washing time using fuzzy logic control. The paper describes the procedure that can be used to get a suitable washing time for different cloths. The process is based entirely on the principle of taking non-precise inputs from the sensors, subjecting them to fuzzy arithmetic and obtaining a crisp value of the washing time. It is quite clear from the paper itself that this method can be used in practice to further automate the washing machines. Never the less, this method, though with much larger number of input parameters and further complex situations, is being used by the giants like LG and Samsung.

Fuzzy Control of Washing Machines
What is fuzzy logic:
In the past, a user had to select the type of wash in a washing machine manually; the amount of water and the duration of the wash cycle had to be keyed in before the washing process began. Today, automatic washing machines employ what is known as fuzzy logic to automate this process. Fuzzy logic is a mathematical system that is capable of analyzing analog input values and converting them into logical variables. The difference between fuzzy logic and digital logic is that the former converts the analog values into continuous values between 0 and 1 while digital logic converts it into a value that is either 0 or 1. This means that the machine is able to judge states that are not only true or false but partially true or false also.

How fuzzy logic saves energy:

Fuzzy logic is an important development in washing machines as it helps save water. Machines that employ fuzzy control are able to calculate the effect of a number of variables and decide the right settings for the wash. The variables that fuzzy control evaluates in a washing machine include the weight of the clothes in the machine, the type of dirt, and the water and electricity required for an optimal wash.

A fuzzy control system is intelligent enough to determine how dirty the clothes are in the washing machine. The washing machine uses an optical sensor to judge the transparency of the water. The amount of dirt is determined by the transparency of the water and the type of dirt is determined by the saturation time. The saturation point is when the water transparency is almost zero. Various types of dirt have different saturation points. Grease, for example, will saturate water after a longer time as grease is less water soluble as compared to other forms of dirt.

Neuro fuzzy control:
Neuro fuzzy control is considered the ultimate form of fuzzy logic. These sensors are able to determine the fabric type of clothes that are about to be washed. This ultimately translates into a smarter wash that can not only preserve clothes being washed but also save on resources that are being employed to get the job done.

When choosing a new washing machine, look for a model that supports fuzzy logic. This will ensure that you not only save energy, but also make your clothes last longer.
